JUMP TO RECIPE

The Home Cook Battle monthly ingredient was chocolate, and Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Soooooo, I created a decadent treat to spoil your valentine.  Not just any chocolate martini, this one’s rimmed with hot cocoa mix, a trick I learned from my friend Zach.  He makes them at his annual holiday party, and they’re so good they usually get me in trouble.  They’re way too yummy to stop at one or two or…  Ok, don’t judge.  I like my chocolate martinis, and the cocoa rim is irresistible.
The cocktail itself is a delectable treat, but I wanted to make it extra indulgent for Valentine’s Day.  Over the top, go big or go home.  If you’re going to celebrate, celebrate big!  So what goes well with chocolate (besides everything)? Strawberries, of course, so I made a batch of chocolate dipped strawberries.  Yeah, baby!  This was dinner.  Tons of antioxidants and vitamin C, smothered in dark chocolate (more antioxidants and heart benefits), and drizzled in white chocolate (just because it looks pretty).  That’s what I told myself anyway as I happily sipped my martini and slowly grazed on one berry after the next.
Godiva chocolate liquor, crème de cacao, vodka, and half-and-half is truly one of the best combos you can put in a cocktail shaker, then paired with chocolate dipped strawberries…game over!  If white chocolate’s your thing, you can make it with white chocolate liquor instead.  Just don’t skip the strawberries.  And if you do, don’t tell me about it.  Perfect for impressing any loved one.  Perfect for dessert.  Perfect just because!  I only have one question for you…Will you be my Valentine?

A decadent treat to spoil any valentine

Ingredients

Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
  • 1 bag (16 ounces) dark chocolate baking chips, you can also use milk chocolate
  • 1 bag (16 ounces) white chocolate baking chips
  • 4 tablespoons shortening, divided
  • 1 pound fresh strawberries, stems attached
Chocolate Martini
  • 1 packet hot cocoa mix, to line the rim of the glass
  • 1 ½ ounces Godiva chocolate liqueur
  • 1 ½ ounces crème de cacao
  • ½ ounce vodka
  • 2 ½ ounces half-and-half, or 1-2% milk

Instructions

Chocolate Dipped Stawberries
  1. Wash strawberries and dry them thoroughly.  Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Pour the dark chocolate baking chips and 2 tablespoons shortening in a microwavable bowl and melt in the microwave at 30-second intervals until melted.  Stir between each interval to prevent chocolate from burning.  Hold a strawberry by the stem, dip it into the dark chocolate, twist to coat well, then let the excess drip off.  Place on parchment paper and repeat with remaining strawberries.
  3. In a separate bowl, repeat the same process with the white chocolate chips and remaining 2 tablespoons shortening until melted.  Using a fork, dip it into the white chocolate and drizzle over the dipped strawberries.  Chill strawberries in the refrigerator until chocolate sets, about 15 minutes.
Chocolate Martini
  1. Pour the hot cocoa mix powder onto a small plate that’s wide enough for your martini glass.  Dip the rim of a martini glass into a small bowl of water.  Shake excess water off, then dip into the cocoa powder, gently swirling to coat well.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.  Add the chocolate liqueur, crème de cacao, vodka, and half-and-half.  Cover and shake until well combined, about 20-30 seconds.
  3. Strain into the prepared martini glass.  Garnish and serve with chocolate covered strawberries.

Notes:

The chocolate will stick better to the strawberries if they’re completely dry.  Get all that moisture off.

If your white chocolate doesn’t drizzle easily, mix in another 1-2 tablespoons of shortening, heat in the microwave for 30 seconds, and stir.  This thins it out.

For a low-fat version, you can substitute 1-2% milk.
