One thing I love to do in the kitchen is take something really easy and ordinary and BUMP IT UP a notch. That's what we did tonight. Who doesn't love grilled cheese, and who doesn't know how to make one? It's one of the most basic things you can put on a plate, and it's three simple ingredients: bread, butter, and cheese. It always hits the spot and somehow just finds a way into your heart.

Often I like to make mine with tomato soup, especially in the winter. I love to dip my sandwich into the soup. And it's great with a slice of tomato and bacon on it too. But tonight, WHOA!!! We really took it up a notch! We used a nice sourdough bread and gruyere cheese from Wholefoods. Right there we were off to a good start. But then what did we do? We drizzled brown butter truffle honey from Truffle Shuffle in the middle, and then when it was nice and toasted, drizzled a little more on top. Ridiculous!!! Nonsense!!! And man did it work!! I could put truffle honey on just about anything, but one of my favorite combos is eating it with cheese. The two were meant to go together.

This is an outstanding example of how to take something so simple and make it gourmet! Get yourself some truffle honey and give it a try.

Recipe for Grilled Cheese with Gruyere and Brown Butter Truffle Honey:

Adapted from Truffle Shuffle

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of your favorite bread, I use sourdough

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter

  • 2-3 slices of your favorite cheese, I use Gruyere

  • 2-3 teaspoons truffle honey, divided in, I like Truffle Shuffle’s Brown Butter Truffle Honey

Instructions:

Preheat skillet over medium heat. Generously butter one side of a slice of bread. Place bread butter-side-down into the skillet. Add your cheese, then drizzle with a teaspoon of truffle honey, more if you’d like. Butter a second slice of bread on one side and place butter-side-up on top of sandwich. Grill until lightly browned and flip over; continue grilling until cheese is melted.
